I and a buddy of mine were on the Wakarusa river fishing in his small boat. We had tied up to a tree that had fallen at an angle from the bank.
Each of us had two fishing lines in. Fishing for catfish so you understand how you can be looking around. Well I look at the other bank and there is this 5 to 6 foot Blacksnake. The snake slithers down the bank into the water and swims right up to the boat where I am sitting. He raises up and crawls in the boat. My buddy is afraid of snakes and he is having baby cows so I pick the snake up toss it back into the river. Here comes the snake again same thing right at my feet he gets into the boat.
I repeat the same thing and toss him back into the river. My buddy is looking for his pistol so he can shoot this snake and I tell him no please let me deal with the snake he won't hurt anyone. Here comes the snake right back into the boat at my feet. This time I pick the snake up toss him up on the bank above the boat. Snake slithers away happily and I start laughing myself silly. All that snake wanted was to get to the other side.
We didn't catch any fish that day but it sure was fun. My buddy still hates snakes, and I don't recall if we ever went fishin' again after that together.

If I was in that boat....I would have been having big baby cows too! But thanks to you....I let the snakes live. As long as I don't see a poisonous one!
That's a great story tho!

Being bitten 40 years ago sparked a fear and loathing of snakes that I've struggled to overcome since. The scar on my leg just below my right calf muscle serves as a reminder. I've overcome this fear to the point I don't go out of my way to destroy them. In fact, I know they have their place. I can't say the poisonous type are so lucky if they venture into my domain. Right or wrong, that's where I draw the line. I don't want my children harmed. All others...I will even get off my mower to move out of harms way...even ill tempered bull snakes.
