My grandson met this one kid at school & they get along good. So tonight he wanted to go over to his house (was invited).
I've met the kid before, seemed OK, and he lives only 1 block away from me.
He comes back on time like he's supposed to... 1 hr later.
Then tells me....... (like he should ) ...... Frank, is what I'll call the kid.
Grandson : "Frank told me his father used to be in the Army, and he came out with one of his father's .22 pistols to show me" . "He told me it was unloaded".
ME : WTH ? He did what ?
Grandson : He brought his dad's .22 handgun out to show it to me.
ME : What did you do ? How do you know it was unloaded, did you check it ? did he have it open so that you saw it was unloaded ? Did he check it was unloaded ?
Grandson : No
ME : Then how did you know it was unloaded ?
Grandson: I don't . .... I assumed it was loaded.
Me : So, why didn't you immediatlely leave the house the second he did that, like you've been told to do ?
Grandson : I don't know.
Me : Think that was wise ?
Grandson : probably not
Me : Now, what if he decided to be a smartass and would have pointed it at you and pulled the trigger, and it was loaded.... you would have been shot and could be DEAD right now ? Think that's smart ?
Grandson : I don't think he would do that.
Me : You barely know him, how would you know that he wouldn't ? You said he thought it was unloaded, but neither of you really knew for sure at all , did you.
Grandson ; No, and I should have left.
Me: You just made my point didn't you. Do you really want to take that chance ? You should have told him you didn't want to see the gun, left immediately.... and walked straight out the door as quick as you could and come home.
Grandson ; I will if he ever does it again.
Me : You could be dead right now...... you are "banned" from ever going to Frank's house again.... ever ... because Frank has shown he as very bad judgment and no sense.... and we want to keep you alive. Got that !!! BUT.... I want to thank you for telling me, and I'm proud of you saying something about it.... for that , you did good.
He then gave me a hug..... and told me that he was glad he told me about it.
Now, .... I have to go have a "discussion " with Frank's parents tomorrow. I will "advise" them what occurred. I'm sure Frank will deny it. I will get a good enough description of the gun, that they will know there is no doubt about it. Grandson is very honest kid, so he wouldn't say something like this if it wasn't true. He knows the ramifications.
That's a conversation I never wanted to have. I've warned them many many times "if anything like this ever happens" , here is what you need to do .. conversations.
WHY ... do some 'parents' NOT secure their guns from kids
