My grandfather , always referred to things before "the big storm" and things "after the big storm" . When questioning the date on one of Wyatt Earp's guns in the museum in Tombstone (and he was right, as they found out) ..... and that he couldn't have had that gun while in Tombstone, because it wasn't made until 8 yrs after the big storm. We tend to reference... via events. When Kennedy was shot, before Kenneny was shot, before the 1968 Gun Control law... etc. I believe , from all he told me and the years he referenced , this has to be the storm he was referring too. Everything he told me about it, also fits the story told here. From all he told me, and it was well etched in his mind, it was pretty bad. kgynradio.net/news/weather/january-1886-blizzards-125-years-later/ January 1886 blizzards — 125 years later From the National Weather Service in Dodge City, here’s an article on the January 1886 blizzards. This reminded me of "The Long Winter" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It was required reading when I was a school lad. In fact, then entire set was required reading.
