No updates the police did show up and look around that morning but they made no contact with my wife to check on her or to even let her know that they were there...no follow up phone call... Nothing.... I polite call to the SO is in order for you. Just find out what they did and communicate your concerns. Nothing "heavy"...unless it happens again. Be a friend and let them know you're on their side...know what I mean. Stay away from the vinegar for now.

Real thieves don't knock on your door at 3:am. They kick the door down. They are armed and they are counting on you being unprepared. Some truth to that. 6:00 a.m. the other morning..... someone banged hard on the back door ... about 8 times (which is close to my bedroom). All 3 dogs went nuts. There was no doubt a person. Went to the door and checking if someone was out there... saw no one, checked and no one around. Just 2 nights ago.... "BANG" at my front door... just one. All 3 dogs went nuts.... I have perimeter alarms that weren't on, and turned them on. Nothing. Never figured out what it was, nor who. Perimeter alarms will definitely be on now and I won't forget to turn them on.

A thought... but could put a motion detector sensor outside with the alarm inside the house to let you know if someone is even approaching the door. It would give her a heads up.
He surely watched you leave, to be at the door that quick after you left, given you are living in the country. Doesn't sound like anything good at all.

yes it sounds like a good idea but it still won't replace being able to defend when someone breaks in. I know you are just suggesting this as an early warning When the primary defender isn't at home. There must be another capable of defending the home. I am sure mom doesn't want one of the kids taking that responsability. Which may be the best way to get mom to carry in the home. Limalife is the lady for her to view on youtube. She will explain it from the females view as can our own in house mom can.

I was actually thinking about a perimeter alarm at the driveway and on the front porch and the back porch...just as an early warning system.....

I was actually thinking about a perimeter alarm at the driveway and on the front porch and the back porch...just as an early warning system..... We had a driveway alarm, but I finally unplugged it. I couldn't see the end of the driveway from the main living area of the house, and it kept going off. Probably either animals, weeds blowing in the wind, or insects. If I had one again, I'd have a camera hooked up as well, so if the alarm goes off, you can see what caused it. Otherwise, it gets to be like "crying wolf".

trail cams are easy enough to install so you at least can get a look at them.

I have considered either going to a camera/monitor in one area, or use a game camera... to get a good pic of whoever has keeps messing with things in that area, that I could also then hand to the police. A few things have ended up stolen .... last summer, then stopped when it got cold. I'm sure it's a couple of nearby teenagers, so they are just a pain, not a threat.

A camera will help with the prosecution of the perps. It will do nothing if they intend to harm other than maybe record the atrocious act. The gun still remains the best home defense.
As for answering the door I reckon that depends on how you perceive the knock on it.

As for answering the door I reckon that depends on how you perceive the knock on it. Yep , I remember seeing one about a guy how had a camera inside his house in the living room, which also gave a view of the dining room. Two guys entered the unlocked sliding doors at at the dining room, in order to rob them. They then shot and killed the owner of the house and two women there. The video was amazingly good.... but it was also one of the only reasons they were able to ID who did it and to catch them. Not what I would want the camera for.

I'd want a camera with a monitor inside that I could look at when the driveway alarm went off, so I could see why the alarm went off. Would be good to have the video image recorded if there was a problem, but the main purpose would be to have a way to see who the visitor happened to be, before they get to the door.
