Real thieves don't knock on your door at 3:am. They kick the door down. They are armed and they are counting on you being unprepared. They will be "unarmed" quickly when my K9 companions get a hold of them...literally. Why do I have more than one? Packs work better together. The bad guy might get one, but, he won't get us all. But, it's doubtful the bad guy would even make it to the front door of my place...at least not before the whole house is alert.

Actually this happened this morning at 4AM...I had just left for work and the wife and kids were home.....I got a call about 5 minutes after I left that someone was beating on our front door and ringing the doorbell....he was wearing a black hoody pulled up around his head and had a backpack on...I live in the country and there shouldn't be anyone around then....my wife never answered the door...and he eventually left....I told her to call the police and go get her gun....the police said they would do a drive by and call her back...we are still waiting for that call....I am gonna talk to her when I get home about what happened and how it should have been handled...she was Insistent that her gun be kept In The locked basement in the locked safe...now I think she may have changed her mind....I'm Gonna give her some what if scenarios when I get home and get her to thinking...

He had no car and what really concerns me is that he had to be close enough to actually see me leave for work....when a guy leaves for work he normally leaves his wife and kids home by theme selves....I think he waited for me to leave....I think he watched me leave...he was there 5 minutes after I left.....it has me thinking..

Sounds like she handled it okay. Kind of worries you when you aren't there to protect your family.

You do need to convince her a gun is needed close at hand when the next guy kicks the door in.

This is my dilemma. I'm wish there were an easy way to equivocate it to just another "accessory". If you think about it, once you've become accustomed to carrying, it's just like a set of keys...in the sense that it has a purpose.

What are her issues with having a gun handy? Maybe all of us can help address those for her?
I certainly understand women being concerned of a child getting their hands on a gun that is kept loaded.
I also know what I was taught as a kid. All of my dad's guns were loaded. We never touched one without him being present as kids.
He did show us what they would do.
He never kept them under lock and key either. They stood in a corner or in a closet. Come to think of it my sisters didn't even care to look at them.

Come to think of it my sisters didn't even care to look at them. That's what I was thinking. I don't tend to wear my gun in my house, but it is stashed within arm's reach of where I sit now. If I were to get an unexpected visitor, I can quickly snap the holster with it around my waist before going to the door. But my kids are in their 20's, and very good with gun safety. When they were younger, we only had long guns in the house. They were kept locked in a glass display case. If there wasn't time to unlock it, I could always break the glass, but it kept the guns safe from the kids. Sort of like having the fire extinguisher under glass. Wouldn't have stopped a burglar, but he'd have to find the display case first, because it isn't out in the main living area. If I had started carrying with the boys were younger, and we lived about anywhere else, I'd probably carry a pocket gun in the house.

To be honest most kids don't think about guns unless they are left right in plain sight and within reach. 4 and 5 year olds are easy to keep a loaded handgun out of their reach. To be honest the safest gun around kids is the one the adult is carrying in a holster.
By the time kids are teenagers they should have had a hunter's safety course and had others besides mom and dad teaching them gun safety.
That knocking on the door in the early morning hours should be enough to convince one to be prepared for the worst.
Although there are many wives who just won't learn to shoot and see a need for the security a gun brings to the home.

She sees a need and she is of against them....she is jut used to me being there and having one....she has her permit she hasn't carried yet though....maybe it's because she is pregnant....she has become more aware as since our early morning visitor...I'm not careless with my guns and I don't leave them laying around loaded but I am pretty confident that my kids would leave them alone...they go shooting with me and unless we are at the range they don't seem I interested in them...I think it's because they are no longer curious about them...education helps....

I wouldn't recommend she practice shooting while pregnant, but she still ought to carry. A deaf child is better than a dead mom & child. She may want to carry a lightweight mouse gun, so she doesn't put more weight on her spine, etc. than a heavier gun, as it gets tiring enough carrying the baby weight all the time. I think you are right about your kids, unless they have friends over. Kids often like to show their friends their hobbies, so if company is over, be extra careful about your guns during that time. However, you do need to start planning on how to keep the guns out of your soon-to-be toddler's reach. You ought to see if you can get your wife to watch Limalife's videos. I know one of them is about her wearing a gun while she's at home.

No updates the police did show up and look around that morning but they made no contact with my wife to check on her or to even let her know that they were there...no follow up phone call... Nothing....
