Kansas Fish and Game just signed a bunch more equipment into legal status for deer and turkeys. www.kansas.com/2013/03/22/2727315/commission-oks-equipment-changes.html"The Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Commission unanimously approved all of the department’s requests for liberalizing weapon and other equipment restrictions during a meeting Thursday evening. • Crossbows will now be legal for all hunters during archery deer seasons. Previously they were only legal for those with approved physical limitations, those 15 and under and 55 and older, in four deer management units involved in a two-year study. The restriction saying all crossbows had to have at least 120 pounds of pull was also removed. • Any centerfire rifle or handgun cartridge can now be used for big game hunting during the appropriate firearm season. • Slugs can now be used in any gauge shotgun for deer hunting, rather than 20 gauge or larger. The restriction saying all crossbows had to have at least 120 pounds of pull was also removed. • Most electronic devices attached to bows are now legal, including such things as attached cameras, and rangefinders. Also, radio frequency devices attached to arrows are also legal. • Any shotgun, regardless of gauge, can now be used for turkey hunting. Before, it was only shotguns 20 gauge or larger."

I think it will be just as deadly a round as the .243 is and I have seen a ton of Elk killed with a .243.

The bullet in the round is more important than the size. Find one that you know will penetrate before expanding. Light bullets tend to fragment upon hitting deer or even a marmot.

Many whitetail are taken every year in Arkansas with a .223 or similar(.22 Hornet, .22-250, etc). It's no less effective than a .243 when you put a good shot on one. I'd be willing to bet more deer are not recovered from .243 and .270 wounds than .223. Why?...bad shots by people that don't know what they're doing. Like TK says, find a good penetrating bullet. If you don't reload, that task will be a little more difficult. Check out this article in North American Hunter. Federal Fusion is a fine consideration. Personally, if you're going to purchasing a rifle, I highly recommend a .260 Remington. It's pretty much what I carry all the time now. Many call it a "great kid/woman" round simply because it doesn't punish the shooter like some many men are fond of. Will it recoil more than your AR? Any bolt gun will. But the .260 not so much as to make it offensive to folks that are recoil sensitive. Pros: As for performance, it's one of the best rounds you can find for down range energy. The round is considered "long for caliber" which means its weight is packed into the length of its diameter. This provides for an excellent ballistic coefficient that gives up velocity grudgingly and a section density that, IMHO, is the key to penetration. Cons: If you don't reload, your choice for ammo is limited, in both supply and configuration(weight, type). Even if you do reload, you're still somewhat limited in bullet choices. The fact is, for some sad reason the 6.5mm had never really caught on in the U.S. even though it has been a favorite of competition/distance distance shouters for years. The availability of firearms is limited to a few manufacturers as well. To date, I think you can only find "man" sized rifles from Savage, Ruger, Cooper, Kimber and Sako(maybe). Sadly, the developer of the .260, Remington, no longer produces anything other than a Model 7. Tikka and Browning have recently dropped it. Sorry for the thread drift, wasn't trying to convert you.

I love talking about rifles and rounds.
Never have heard much about the .250 Remington. I reckon I been out of studying rifles too long.

I'm ready to go hunting with my AR15. It is handy for me, being left handed, to get a second shot off if needed. My time in the army shooting at various targets shows me it's capable of taking antelope or deer with a single well placed shot.

Much to my hunting buddies dismay ( he hates AR15's anything tactical and the .223 round in general ) I will probably use mine this year as well.... I may need to hunt with just my kids this year..kind of keep him out of the loop....

I will say I could guarantee a kill with a .22 short if I make a neck shot on a kansas whitetail. Of course range comes into play as well. The .223 will kill deer all day long and efficiently anybody that doesn't think so is a fuddy duddy that likes to tell other people what will work or won't. Without knowing what they are talking about.
I can kill deer with my 9mm using reason. I can kill a deer with my pocket knife using reason as well.
