Because BG's aren't just sticking to "bad areas" of town, or hours when I'm home in bed.

'Cause after 25 years working as a paramedic, I have seen what people can do to each other on the street.

So what brings someone to the point of wanting to carry a gun for self-defense? Well it varies from person to person. For some people it’s a close call experience that they may have had. For others like me they take a look at what is going on in the world and decide that it is their responsibility as a father and a husband. I believe that God has intrusted me with my family and I need to do everything possible to raise them a protect them. Even if that means carrying a gun. I didn’t make this decision because its fun or because its cool, I made it because it’s the best way I know how to accomplish this.
Carrying a gun (if done correctly) affects everything you do. It affects where you go, what you say, and how you act. It gives you more perspective. It causes you to heighten your situational awareness. It takes discipline and dedication. It takes time and it takes money. It takes the understanding of your immediate family. You are not just carrying a gun, you are living the armed lifestyle.

After a few years of taking karate....I finally realized that sometimes just using brains, feet, and empty hands isn't enough against the evil out there. Only I can be responsible for keeping myself safe....and carrying a firearm is the best way to do that. Like teccles said....it's not just carrying, but it becomes a way of life - especially to do it safely. I honestly believe that training is extremely important too....especially for someone like me who hasn't been shooting for a long time. And the way I am, I know that if an evil person decided to attack me and my family - I couldn't live with myself if I didn't do everything that I could do to make sure my family members made it home safely. (One example....the Luby's incident in Texas.)
As a side note..... I was raised that firearms are only for hunting, and I wasn't really interested in hunting back then. So I never really took the time to learn much about guns. Once I showed some interest in learning how to shoot, my husband jumped at the chance to start teaching me....little did either of us know how much I would really enjoy it!
Now thanks to bad genes, I don't practice karate any more (messed up neck and lower back), so I spend my spare time practicing shooting, learning/reading anything I can about firearms, self-defense, self-defense/firearm laws, etc etc..., participating in shooting sports (bullseye league, GSSF, going to try 3-gun, and hopefully some day try out some long-distance shooting 'just for fun' competitions), learning how to make minor repairs, glock armorer...
And it took some time, but I've even convinced my parents that firearms aren't just for hunting...
So what started out as a plan for self-defense, has grown into a hobby too.

I think it is time for me to post why I carry.
As a kid I seen things that showed me just how cruel some people could be. Seen too many times personally where trying to reason with the person who could do the life taking did not work.
Seen too much of waiting on the LEO.
Felt the tragedy of losing an uncle to the hands of meth-heads.
Seen how the court system works and how often it is releasing those who aren't fit for society any longer released. More so how so many on the side of the sick people who take a life to get money for drugs testify and then go back home. They are just as sick as the one on trial but haven't yet sunk to killing to get their dope.
I carry because I am bound and determined nobody will ever hurt me or mine when I am around. I carry because I can and do so anywhere.
I carry because I have grand children to teach.
I pray I can carry every day of my life and never have to use the pistol I carry. I know I can use the pistol I carry if I need to use it. For whatever or whomever requires it.

Because of working violent crimes, and the people who committed them and dealing with way too many pscyhopaths and see the harm so many can do without any thought at all about it. No feelings, nor empathy, no nothing... no regard for others in any way, etc. I didn't just go after these guys, I got to know many of them quite well, and even spent time going to the prison, etc. and having discussions with them, figuring the more I understood how they 'thought' would also help in catching others. Plus, my education (2 of my degrees) are related and I did a lot related to prisons, etc. and these types during that time as well. Too many personal threats made at me while doing that job by people who were serious folks (had already killed or committed very violent crimes) who would do what they say if they had the chance. Example: the one guy we were after who tried to break into my house late at night when I wasn't there but my wife (pregnant with our first) was, and then who showed up at the offices and the detention center asking for me and some others, and then tried to shoot everyone he could with a .45 1911 to see how many people he could kill... and was never caught (1/2 his entire family of father, uncle, cousins in prison for murder). He's a pure psychopath deluxe. We had tried hard to keep him locked out, and the Judge had released him.. and we told the Judge.... someone is going to end up dead as a result of that decision. There were a few times normal folks who were being threatened by someone, and I tried to convince them (quite adamantly) they needed to carry and have a gun. Didn't, and ended up dead. One who did listen, shot and killed their assailant when he broke into her house, he was armed & ready to go. An old neighbor that had BTK break into her house & she escaped, which the news media never knew about. Also been shot at several times. I can go on and on. Bottom line, too many psychopaths and it's gotten much worse, that will kill folks without a blink of the eye or care, and people just can't wrap their head around the fact they exist ... and it's real.... and it can happen to them. I dealt with people like this (below at link) ... a 17 & 14 yr old who shot a 1 1/2 yr old in the face at point blank range, because they tried to rob the mother and she didn't have any money. These are the 'types' I know oh so well. The Aunt is giving the kid who did the shooting an alibi, and the mother "he has too kind of a heart do do that" . Yet, he's been ID'd by not just the mother, and there is other evidence the police have it's him, that they won't release. Baby's death marks 2nd time Georgia mom loses a son to violence www.cnn.com/2013/03/23/us/georgia-baby-killed 911 Call released : www.digtriad.com/news/national/article/276651/175/911-Calls-Released-In-GA-Baby-Shooting Police arrest 2 teens in Georgia baby killing www.kansascity.com/2013/03/23/4139211/police-arrest-2-teens-in-ga-baby.html www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/23/911-callers-baby-shot/2013113/ Many people have asked me if I could really shoot someone.... if you watched the above, that's the types I went after and dealt with. They could do that and go eat lunch and not bother them at all. There a LOTS more out there today, then there were then. The chances are, you have met one or crossed path of one and didn't even realize it. My answer: if necessary ... in a heart beat, because I will protect my grandkids, etc. and I sure don't plan to die as a result of one of these scumbags. Anyone who doesn't realize that, have been sleeping in a tent in the middle of no where, or are really good at keeping their head in in the sand.

I carry 'cause I can.
Back when I lived in California, on occasion practice open carry, discreetly. Well not to often, mostly when traveling long distances. Toss the gun on the dashboard, magazine in the chest pocket. Nobody ever noticed. Can't say I never carried concealed, but I could count the number of times on one hand.
Had to consider who I feared more.
Bad guys or the law.
It sucks when the bad guys win that battle, cause if I need and use the gun, then the law would have a bite at me.
A great lesson, is, how bad do I want to go where I fear the law than possible bad guys? What is the decision process?
All I can say is, it was that important to me.

I have seen the evil/good that a firearm can do first hand and I know that if a bad person decides to do evil we need a way to even the balance of power..I have a business that requires I carry some pretty large sums of cash sometimes and I would feel like a fool if I made it easy for someone to take the proceeds from my labor and I would feel even worse if I allowed a loved one to be hurt/killed because I wasn't prepared for the worst..
There have been two times that my gun has saved my butt since I left the PD and they were both BEFORE CCW was legal but I am still here and in one piece..
We all understand that having a heavy chunk of iron tucked in your belt is less then comfy but it's the price we pay to do our best to protect us and our loved ones and even maybe a complete stranger in some cases..
