www.kansas.com/2013/03/14/2716376/sheriffs-deputy-impostor-strikes.htmlSheriff’s deputy impostor strikes again
A man suspected of impersonating a law enforcement officer in dozens of Kansas towns on Wednesday targeted a Colorado business 18 miles from the state border, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said. > Robert Helms, 45, showed up at the Walsh, Colo., grocery store, again portraying a sheriff’s deputy from Adams County, Kan., which doesn’t exist, the KBI said in a news release. As in other cases, Helms on Wednesday flashed a fake badge and credentials. > Helms is accused of canvassing Kansas and cashing or writing bogus checks at convenience and other stores in a string of impersonations that stretch back to Jan. 6, according to a timeline released in February by the KBI. Authorities think he may target businesses in southwestern Kansas and southeastern Colorado over the next few days. > Helms is described as a white man, 5-feet-7, weighing 190 pounds, with blue eyes and short gray hair. He wears round glasses at times, may look older than his age and has been known to drive a maroon or dark-colored Dodge or Chrysler minivan, the KBI has said. > Anyone with information about Helms’ whereabouts is asked to call 911 or 800-572-7463 (KS CRIME).

Maybe he figures that people in Colorado are less likely to have learned the names of all the KS counties? Seriously, I hope they catch this guy soon!

News travels slow in Colorado. The people that work where he is going to stop are going to cash a check because he says he is LEO.

Good thing I don't own or drive Chrysler vehicles...I might get stopped based on the given description.

I don't think I have heard about this case yet....I was thinking this thread was going to be about the other recent cases in KS of the LEO-imposter (unless these 2 are the same guy?)--- Is there anything new with the case involving the police officer imposter who was actually pulling people over here in KS - I think once in Paola (Miami Co) and a couple of times in Sedgwick Co?

Roger, on the MiCo incident...about 6 miles up the road from me. Still at large AFAIK.
Which reminds me...be weary of people looking for directions. They might be casing your place. There was a out-of-town couple arrested a couple years back. They would knock on doors at rural homes, if no answer, they would burglarize it. I just happened to be home when they came to my house. When I answered, they asked for directions to so-and-so's place...they got nothing from me and I later found out about their MO.

They've told people out here in the boonies to report anyone unexpected dropping by for just that reason. Too many daytime burglaries when people aren't home.

This guy has been seen in KS cashing (or attempting to anyway) checks. I don't know if he is the same imposter who has been pulling people over or not.

That's how they knew it was the same guy.... and he used "one" of the same names he had in Kansas.

Interesting you say that about the couple that was asking for directions in rural KS - and robbing the place if no one was home. We live in JOCO KS but really close to the Douglas CO line and not too far from the MICO line. A couple years ago on a weekday (A Tues, IIRC) at around 2-3AM, a woman in her late twenties knocked on our front door. Both my husband and I were home, but if we don't know the person, we don't answer the door. Especially at 2AM. She was wearing a "party dress". So my husband asked her what she wanted - thru the closed door....while I scoped out the area around where she had parked, and where she was standing etc. best I could without going outside. She said she needed directions to somewhere, he gave them to her thru the door, while she kept looking around anxiously, and she left. We thought it was really weird tho. The closest house to us is a quarter of a mile away. We are 10 miles from the closest city and our driveway is about 100 yards from the road. It just seemed weird that a woman in her late twenties is all dressed up on a weekday at 2AM, without a cell phone, knocking on the door of a random house in the middle of no where....saying she is lost. It may have been true, but again.....just odd. I couldn't see if anyone else was in the car with her, but no one else got in or out of the vehicle. She's just lucky that she didn't stop at: Joe "Shoot thru the Door" Biden's house!!

Knocking on the door and if someone answers asking for directions is the Topeka meth-head mo all the way.

I think I may have very nearly been your neighbor at one time. But have been gone from that area from 7+ years. Sorry, OP, didn't mean to get off topic.
